Upgrading FreeBSD

This is mostly a note to myself but in case it's helpful to anyone here's what I do:

1) First, cvsup:
# cvsup -L 2 /root/ports-supfile

2) Back up the package database:
# cd /var/db
# tar cvfz var.db.pkg.tgz pkg

3) Check for consistency:
# pkgdb -F

4) Then, list outdated ports that have a newer version available in the Ports Collection with the pkg_version(1) command:
# pkg_version –vl '<'

5) Read /usr/ports/UPDATING

6) Upgrade one at a time and make sure to install dependencies:
portupgrade -R [pkg name]

SNMP, MRTG, and Debian

Well, after struggling half the day I finally (well, almost) have SNMP and MRTG working well together on Coyote (Linux coyote 2.4.26-1-386). The problem was that I couldn't seem to read any interesting information (network statistics, CPU usage, etc.) using SNMP. All I could do was get the basic stuff in the system tree like contact information. So here is a hopefully half decent writeup.

INITIAL PROBLEM
Using the Debian snmpd package in combination with the mrtg package produces graphs of no activity.

SYMPTOMS

  • MRTG displays no network activity out of the box, although that is clearly not really the case.

So much to report

Well, I started school, coyote got cracked, coyote got rebuilt, and finally I'm getting everything up and working again. Go me. And way to go for me to summarize 3 months in to three sentences.

Upgraded Debian

Yay, finally an apt-get upgrade that didn't require manual tweaking! I upgraded like 100 packages too. Whew. I really should reboot some time to test the new kernel image, though.

Upgraded to 4.4.1

I just upgraded to Drupal 4.4.1. It seems to be working ok. I really have to write in this blog more often...

Hobbes's Birthday

My work friend Kevin and his roommate were throwing a birthday party for their cat, Hobbes, on Saturday. Hey, any excuse for a party when the weather is this nice I guess. It was pretty fun, even though I didn't know most of the people there.

I think that Callie is jealous of the party. She is sitting on the desk next to me while I type this. Well maybe she's not all that jealous. She wouldn't like it if other people were here to distract me from her.

So anyway, highlights of the even were, of course, the drinking games. I learned how to play King's Cup. It involves a deck of cards that will get ruined, and lots of beer. You just take turns picking cards randomly. I don't remember all the rules, but basically the last person to draw a king has to drink the pitcher. Of course the rest of the time people are drinking like crazy because for nearly every card that's drawn, SOMEONE has to drink. I learned two things: 1) Kevin is the Question Master, and 2) Don't mess with my ability to draw 4 10s in a row (which means I got to make stupid rules everyone had to follow). Well I guess the third thing I learned was that you should know how many kings are in the deck before you start. Let's just say that in this particular instance, with three kings already drawn and only three cards remaining, there was a 2/3 chance of drawing a king. That math doesn't work out right.

Ok, so this is a blog

Well the day has finally come that I get my own blog. I have to admit, this is technically my THIRD actual blogging post, but the other two were tests so I feel like they shouldn't count.

Anyway, this is my blog. And my webpage. I know, it's not that cool. I don't even have a custom theme yet. Or content. Aside from this blog and some Desert Combat screenshots.

But hey, what are you going to do?
